One complete performance task with an appropriate scoring tool
Children will create an 'honest' advertising campaign for a food-related product they select. Then they will explain why they chose the product and the advertising approach to the class. For example, they could select an orange, and advertise its value of vitamin C or they could select a whole grain children's breakfast cereal and advertise that it is "not really healthy, but not as unhealthy as some other cereals." The advertising campaign must be based on the nutritional information they research on their own.
After all of the students have made their presentations, the class will discuss what they have learned, in terms of how and why they make decisions about what they eat. They will discuss if the way they eat has changed as a result of the unit.

Students will receive two grades, one for the creativity of the assignment design (such as visual cleverness and use of language) and the other for the accuracy of nutritional information and use of logical and ethical ways of persuading the audience to choose the food product.
Information that will be sent to parents about the assessments before and after the unit
Parents will receive a note from the teacher explaining why students need to keep an accurate food log the week before the unit commences. They will be asked to critically discuss various food advertisements with their children over the course of the unit. Parents will be encouraged to take an active part in the learning process, and to discuss family dietary choices with their children. At the end of the unity, they will be sent information about how to use the information the class has accumulated in their everyday lives.
